Mother Earth

Mother Earth, the elemental mother of Berdea and its people is based in the forest, the soil and all the plants of the land. She is the guardian of all new life and growth and is recognised everywhere by the colour green. She may correspond to the Goddess Asmara of Oramia, Kashiq and Soora.

In Berdea, she is particularly recognised in the huge cedar trees which fill the forests.

A story is told in the book of how the tears of the cedar fell into Mother Earth and became the pieces of amber that can be found as remnants of ancient forests. Amber is the stone of the Earth found on the Amulet of Berdea.

Mother Earth is often depicted cradling a hare. The hare is often associated with the moon, like Mother Earth, and relies on the plants of Mother Earth to live and the earth itself to live in.

Amber represents Mother Earth in the Amulet because it is something like a stone but it is made of what was once the sap of life for a tree. Often, amber contains small insects who have become stuck in it. Amber can be found in a range of colours, from very light, almost transparent through shades of green and into dark orange.

The ceramic models of the Elemental family were made by me as I explored them in my writing, and as examples of what Brother Zaan's wood carving might have looked like. They are just one interpretation of an invisible entity.

Mother Earth is shown in a green robe decorated with plants and flowers and cradling a brown hare as a symbol of the earth and creation.
